What is enough?
“Enough” is something of an ambiguous word, yet it has great meaning… on the one hand it can define a limit as in a mother telling her unruly children, “Enough!”… enough arguing, enough noise… in this case, enough usually means stop what you are doing, move on to something else….
“I’ve had enough” often refers to an ending, explaining, for example, why we’re ready to end a relationship. But enough can also speak to being satisfied, complete…as in pushing back our plates at dinner, having enough in our gardens that we can share with the neighbours.
I was twigged to talk about having enough by a reading I did recently for a lovely Japanese woman that I have known for many years… now in her early 40’s, she wanted to know about moving to Thailand to be with her long-time boyfriend… and also about some ideas she had for business there… she said she wanted to make a lot of money so she could start a school to help the children… I was struck by her desire to make “a lot of money”, knowing also that her ideas, while possible, were not realistic, given where my friend was in life at the moment… I couldn’t help myself but to jump in with “But sweetheart, you don’t need to be rich, you just need to have enough… enough money to be comfortable, enough good work to feel good about yourself, enough love to fill your heart and lift your soul…” I then offered a number of suggestions around how she could have enough to do what she wanted, including helping the children…. I heard recently from her that she is working on the ideas I offered and feeling quite happy about her progress… she understood that enough would be good enough for her.
That conversation led me to asking what is enough? I thought of the Native advice to “take what you need and leave the rest. What is it that makes us want more, more stuff, more toys, bigger stuff, bigger toys? Some hoard food and possessions – and money – thinking that this will give them power, secure them against attack…… meanwhile others have neither food nor shelter… and those who will attack will find a way, and when they don’t, Mother Nature has a way of balancing the excesses…
I wonder what our world would look like if we each focused on having enough, as opposed to more…? Think about what enough means in your life…
I wish you enough sun to keep your attitude bright,
I wish you enough rain to appreciate the sun more. |
I wish you enough happiness to keep your spirit alive.
I wish you enough pain so that the smallest joys in life appear much bigger.
I wish you enough gain to satisfy your wanting.
I wish you enough loss to appreciate all that you possess.
I wish you enough hellos to get you through the final good-bye. (Author Unknown)
