Phil, On the Gulf Oil Spill

by Phil Reckard

The Gulf oil-spill is simply the end result of what happens when Big Business owns our politicians and/or our governments, no matter where we live in the world. They have de-regulated themselves resulting in this as well as our current economic malaise – the fox (news) that rules the hen-house.Righteous indignation is only a good thing if we truly know the difference between what is right and what is wrong, blessed versus evil, perceived and delusional threats versus real ones, and whether we live in fear of a vengeful God or trust our instincts that we are all aspects of the All That Is. If so, we are only killing ourselves and driving our fellow critters into extinction, which only an irrational God would fully appreciate.

This oil mess is merely another painful example of what the New Age movement of the Seventies and Eighties were talking about regarding the “coming Earth changes.” We have met the enemy and they are us – anyone who relies on fossil fuels for our livelihoods. If we drive to and from work or school, it’s the 800 pound gorilla in the back seat. If we need plastics to protect our food, it’s the Great White shark in our refrigerators. If we sit behind computers to connect with each other, it’s the volcano lurking in our power plants, just down the road.

What to do about it all is so complex that a multi-pronged approach is of course required. If we’re living in truly democratic societies, we vote out the corporate-owned bums, although we can never precisely know who these corporate prostitutes might be. They own their game and control a vast majority of our media – they even own the Tea Party “movement” – an astro-turf mass of human puppets defending corporate greed in a violence-tinged, incoherent rage. This is where we need to rely on our intuitions to know who’s who, those who would fight for the deadly status quo versus those who would work for responsible change. When the people lead, the leaders will follow.

We can and must do the little things to conserve what we already have and become mindful consumers, knowing precisely what we need versus what we only think we want. Recycling everything we can is a great start, but so is not buying stuff we don’t absolutely need in the first place.

But perhaps the most essential place to begin the clean-up starts with our individual selves, the only thing and person we can ever fully control. The New Age movement was based on some universally held premises that are requiring a comeback these days, stuff that we need to fully own at this time rather than merely parrot in our “white light” glaze. These are so much more than mere bumper-sticker mentalities – they’re Universal truths – not limited to the following:

“Be here now.”

“Everything happens for a reason.”

“Everything is connected.”

“A mind is like a parachute – it only works when it’s open.”

“Free your mind and your body will follow.”

“We create our own realities.”

“As above, so below. As within, so without. As the Universe, so the soul.”

“The kingdom of heaven is inside you.”

“Be in the world, but not of the world.”

“We are the Crown of Creation.”

“Evolution? We have the fossils – we win.”

“Go with the flow.”

“This is the dawning of the Age of Aquarius.”

“We must become the change we want to see in the world.”

“Miracles happen.”

“The Goddess has returned and boy is She pissed!”

“Make love, not war.”

“The only thing we have to fear is fear itself,” the list goes on and on.

Into animal totems? How about adopting the pelican – the ones that were “told” to fly away by their instincts – unafraid of moving into uncharted territories. They’re the survivors, breeding smarter babies and evolving as a result, as opposed to their fear-filled feathered brothers and sisters stuck in the muck of inaction by their own creation.

Do we humans have any other choice?

  1. Beautiful article Phil. I agree with you. I also feel every individual needs to feel some sense of accountability and responsibility. True change starts within ourselves.
